Hidden Gem: I'm Here

Spike Jonze’s knack for surrealism makes him one fun director to keep an eye on, from full featured Kaufman scripts to his latest work, “I’m Here.”

Hollywood is losing the glamour that used to catch my attention. Rather than pioneering new methods of storytelling, Hollywood takes the easy way out by recycling old ideas and making them three-dimensional. Spike Jonze caught my attention earlier this year when he released his short film free for audiences over 18 online at imheremovie.com on Mar 19.

The layout and interface of the website cleverly simulates an actual theatre —one which you can walk in and go to the ticket booth and choose whether you want to watch the movie or the bonus material. The sky backdrop even adapts itself to real time, which is very neat. My only complain was the electronic statement, which took several refreshes to work on two different browsers.

Absolut Vodka endowed the project and gave Jonze complete artistic freedom to produce a film about anything. With about half an hour of run time, Jonze created something sweet and memorable. The aesthetics and costumes are idiosyncratic and very Jonzesque. All characters were well developed and every scene were oh-so relatable to the youth culture, which is Jonze’s niche.

The story centers around Sheldon, a much-reserved blue collar droid in an alternate reality not so different than ours other than humans and robots inhabit the societies. As a robot, he lives a very mundane and sheltered life —working day shifts at the public library and returning to his studio apartment to charge his batteries. Life takes a sharp turn for the better when he meets Anne, an edgy fembot who is a real live wire.

The premise of the film is pretty much a boy-meets-girl-and-then-boy-sacrificing-it-all-for-the- “one”-type deal. Jonze adds his own flavor and tweaks a few screws to create something a little different.

Spare half an hour of your time and you won’t regret it.

Interview with Mr. Martinez

Mr. Hector Martinez gives advice for underclassmen and parents
by Elena ScottKakures

ESK: Do you have any advice for sophomores and freshmen?
HM: Have fun with your time at Webb, get involved, get good grades, play sports, and become a leader. Don’t stress! Webb is the meal. College is the dessert; everyone gets it at the end. A good Webb experience equals getting into a good college.

ESK : Any advice for nervous parents?
HM: This is a very emotional process. For the first time the child is in the driver’s seat. This process is all about the student and the parent gets to watch it and take a back seat. They need to have faith in their children.
-encourage
-support
-don’t do any work for kids
-try hard not to stress
-be glad your kid goes to Webb. You have a lot less to worry about than other parents.
Kids, be nice to your parents because they’re paying for it.

ESK: What elements make a great personal statement (essay)?
HM: It’s all about the story. Be very specific. It has to capture the reader in the first paragraph. This is the only piece that allows the student to have some voice, so spend some time on it.

Guys.....Take Notes

by Andrew B.
You may not be Mr. Bruce Spruce, but as Albert Camus said, “Alas, after a certain age every man is responsible for his face (his presentation).” Guys: When you conquer your insecurities, J.Crew would be an ideal holiday destination for those who would like to try a more urbane look.
As boys become men, they must learn how to groom themselves. Boys totter to their college interviews in oversized Quicksilver hoodies and baggy jeans without thinking to run a comb across their head; Men glide anywhere with utter confidence in fitted clothing that are on a different plane of sophistication than a Billabong tee-shirt.
Men often refrain from shopping or displaying a slight sign of intrigue for clothes because this activity is such an exclusive activity for women in our culture—the American culture.
Many men cannot sacrifice their time for haute couture. The most conservative and smart road for the Average Joe is narrowing it down to a clean, fitted 50’s preppy New Englander look. This means slacks (not jeans), collared long-sleeve shirts (sleeves rolled up), and don’t forget – the Sperry Topsiders. J.Crew has all of this.
Their winter collection for men ranges from chic military-grade jackets to the best price-to-look ratio dress shirts. One attractive, yet subtle, attribute to most of their collection is their buttons. Their buttons have a cherry-oak-like pattern that compliments the shirts colors and fabrics to yield a rustic vibe.
Dapper Dans and Average Joes alike pay a visit to this amazing store.

Best Collaboration

In this clash of the decades, Canadian glam rock band Platinum Blonde’s original hit single “Not in Love” has had two amazing makeovers. In early 2010, electro noise punk duo Crystal Castles covered it and in late 2010 it had a music legend voiceover.

Crowned NME’s coolest person of 2009, renegade babe Alice Glass rightfully abdicates her vocal contributions to “Not in Love” from their second self-titled LP, Crystal Castles (ii), to no other than The Cure’s frontman Robert Smith.

Having Alice Glass’s beloved shrill vocals distorted by a synthesizer to sound robotic made “Not in Love” artificial and edgy to the point of distaste, which is redeemed by the song’s beguiling electronic ambiance. Robert Smith fills in the discrepancies between the song’s human attributes and synthetic qualities.

For decades, Smith’s evocative voice has mesmerized The Cure fans and listeners and has proved that boys do cry. Smith’s consoling vocals, complimented by the poignant mood set by Crystal Castles, is synergy at work to create something more powerful than the two original pieces.

A fine example of transcendentalism; through Platinum’s Blonde’s success, one small hit has transformed into something mesmerizing to suit a modern audience.

This track saw the light of day Oct. 27, and has plagued the walls of music blogs and online publications ever since. This was a clever marketing ploy to build hype up to its Dec. 6 release.

“Not in Love [Feat. Robert Smith]” is one of the best collaborations period.

Cookies+Mrs. Kingsbury=The Holiday

Originally derived from the “Crusteos” at Some Crust Bakery in the Village, the homemade oreo cookie science teacher Sadie Kingsbury is famous for delights students and faculty alike. I had the pleasure of baking them with her last month.
The cooking day began as sophomores Vincent Law, Ivy Yeung, and Marissa Pang, Shasta (their dog) and I gathered around the Kingsbury’s kitchen to commence the baking. Each of us was assigned a different task, either making the filling or making the cookie. The recipe was easy and simple to follow. Once we baked the cookies two sheets at a time in rotation, we let them cool, then started filling them.
The cookies were delicious, the frosting identical to what you would find in an Oreo. Instead of the imprint Oreo usually stamps on the front, we changed and personalized it. To make them festive, Mrs. Kingsbury suggested that we decorate the sides with sprinkles or color dye, or we could just leave them black and white. “Especially when I do the cookie from scratch, I love it because I put a lot of effort and time into it, and it’s one of the ways of expressing my love for my family,” said Kingsbury.
Mrs. Kingsbury loves cooking for her family, especially healthy meals. “I love being able to serve and help my family in that way,” she said. Kingsbury focuses on using vegetables in her meals, but strives to maintain good flavor throughout the meal. “I like baking, but if I really had to choose, cooking meals is probably my favorite thing to do” she said. Her favorite type of cooking is California fusion. She enjoys working with different ingredients. “I enjoy the science of it, I like the flavors,” she said.
For those of you who don’t cook OR bake, here’s some advice from the science teacher, “For baking, you can do it. Get a cook book that you trust. If you get a recipe from a magazine, don’t do it for the first time for an event. Always do it the second time, always test it out…be patient and don’t give up!”
Other tips from Mrs. Kingsbury…
- Keep recipes in a safe place ( like behind the cupboard board)
- When making your own bread, add only enough flour till it just starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl, “You don’t want to always add the amount of what the recipe says.”
- One of the basic cookbooks: Better Homes and Garden New Cook Book, “you start there because it has all the basics.”

Recipe:
cookie
2 boxes of devil’s food cake mix
4 eggs (room temperature)
1 ½ cups shortening

Filling
1 package of gelatin
5 cups powder sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup shortening

First, make the filling, since it takes longer.
Preheat oven to 350 F
Heat the gelatin in a porcelain mold until it becomes firm, prepare dry ingredients.
Add powder sugar, shortening, vanilla extract and gelatin when ready. Mix.
Next, add good cake mix to the mixer and eggs one at a time and then 1 ½ cups of shortening. After that is done, make round shaped dough and place on cookie sheet.
To make a round shaped cookie, use a glass cup to press down on cookie and flatten.
Bake for approximately 8-10 minutes.
