Interview with Mr. Martinez

Mr. Hector Martinez gives advice for underclassmen and parents
by Elena ScottKakures

ESK: Do you have any advice for sophomores and freshmen?
HM: Have fun with your time at Webb, get involved, get good grades, play sports, and become a leader. Don’t stress! Webb is the meal. College is the dessert; everyone gets it at the end. A good Webb experience equals getting into a good college.

ESK : Any advice for nervous parents?
HM: This is a very emotional process. For the first time the child is in the driver’s seat. This process is all about the student and the parent gets to watch it and take a back seat. They need to have faith in their children.
-encourage
-support
-don’t do any work for kids
-try hard not to stress
-be glad your kid goes to Webb. You have a lot less to worry about than other parents.
Kids, be nice to your parents because they’re paying for it.

ESK: What elements make a great personal statement (essay)?
HM: It’s all about the story. Be very specific. It has to capture the reader in the first paragraph. This is the only piece that allows the student to have some voice, so spend some time on it.
